During that era in the 1980s when uneducated hair-farmers roamed Sunset Strip in ass-less pants, there was a band in the hills of Los Angeles breathing new life into a sound that found home in the canyons just over a decade earlier. Highway 101 played cosmic American music with beautiful high-lonesome harmonies a la Gram and Emmylou. Although Minnesotan Paulette Carlson's heavenly rasp graced their melodic Country Rock with inflections similar to a twangy Stevie Nicks, the band had their own pastoral sound. It was a cocktail of rural Roots Rock mixed with warm and slick 1980s production techniques and song melodies that floated above the instrumentation.
